Interview to Luis Landeo and Greg Maupin from Archaic Winter

Welcome my friends from Archaic Winter to Lotus Metal Peru, how do you feel you after of the release of the demo?
Luis Landeo: For be sincerous, with a lot anxiety for still producing more music, this demo was very brutal for us. For me this was my first musical production like lead singer, but previously I did a collaboration for the band Priorato from Ecuator, making the electronic sounds for a song of their full lenght, and this song was released with the name of Cooperation in their álbum: Negative. But taking back about Archaic Winter the demo was uploaded to Mediafire or you can check it in our facebook or youtube account. 
Greg Maupin: I am very excited to release the Demon demo. The demo has given new life to the band and so far I have only receive good reviews. It is very encouraging to hear all the good remarks about the demo.

What is the concept behind the new lyrics of Archaic Winter now? 
Luis Landeo: I wrote the lyrics for this demo, are of some way kinda prophetic, because I take parts of the Book of Revelations, all this lyrics are about: Satan, the antichrist, black magic and Armaggedon, for example October Fire this lyric is about the rise of apocalipse, this lyric is the description about the curse of the last days of humanity, cuz is the visión of a new prophet, he see the comes of the antichrist but then he can see how his prophecy comes in reality, this song is like the scream of a mute person, or the advisement of a crazy man, nobody put attemption and then that turn in true, October is the month of the most important Sabbat: Halloween, and for this reason is the name of the song: October Fire, anyways is the best month for start the fall of human beings (laughting) I am the new antichrist: this is the most evil song of the demo, cuz this song is completely about the antichrist, but talk about the antichrist is talk about previous antichrists: Napoleon Bonaparte and Hitler. Napoleon was an arrogant man , and he had problems with the pope Pio VII, and about Hitler well he was a megalomaniac and he had the death in his hands, cuz he sent to kill no only jews, he sent to kill: Gays, lesbians, gypsy people, and people against his goverment , so checking all this i said: the new antichrist have to be a mix of this previous antichrist: a megalomaniac and sadistic man, a real dictator obviously in league with satan for this reason the chorus in this song is: “DEATH EXIST, IM THE DEATH, THE DEATH IS IN MY HANDS, I TAKE DECISITION OF YOUR LIFE” and “you will take my mark and invocations to the devil” is because the devil have a mark and his connection with the devil will be with black magic, for that reason this song is completely evil and dark (laughting) About Satanic Power this song is the part 2 of Im the antichrist, this song is about the antichrist getting his power with the black magic, and with black magic he can feel all the power he have in his hands for create, make and destroy for satisfy his evil desires. New World Chaos well for be short this song is about the visión of satan in the apocalipse and the armagedon, this song is like the end of an horror movie, maybe will continue , maybe no (laughting) Wrote this lyrics was for me a great experience for explore my twisted and apocalyptic side, obviously i dont like be blasphemous, cuz in Archaic Winter we want different of the rest of bands, and no the same black death metal band, so we give you a good horror story than the same lyrics of the rest of bands.

I notice the evolution of the band in this 6 years, and it changed, in a brutal sound since the release of the psychology of death, cuz it was a black death metal with a lot distortion, and heavy but this new album have a black death metal more melodic and elaborated, how was the process of recording? 
Greg Maupin: Well, I have always been a fan of heavy, dark music. I do not want boundaries put on Archaic Winter’s music. And I try to create heavy tones with my fingers, guitar scales and chords, not with guitar distortion. The progression to a more blackish and melodic sound has been a natural one. I did not plan it that way, it just happened. Luis has a voice that is very versatile and is perfect for the musical ideas that I have. I wrote the guitar, drums and bass lines over a 2 month period. I recorded the songs here in the USA in my own studio and then sent the songs to Luis for vocals. He wrote the lyrics and taped his voice and sent the files back to me so that I could mix them into the songs. Everything happened very fast and efficiently. 
Luis Landeo: Yeah, true, i taped my voice in my house with some software I have for tape my voice and was like work in my own studio, anyways for us the “distance” is a wall and like every wall you can break it with a good hammer, and our hammer is our like for the music and we break it, and the important is make the things with a lot heart.

Do you think record a full lenght? and how will be the sound of this new full lenght?
Greg Maupin: Yes, we plan to do a full length this year. The sound will be similar to the Demon demo. The full length will include many different influences but the core sound will be Blackish Death metal.

Who did the art of the demo? And what is the concept behind it? And what means the Archaic Winter simbol?
Luis Landeo: I did the art of the demo the star represent the satanism and the eye the Illuminatti, and that society is very in league with the antichrist so i said: the lyrics about the antichrist and the apocalypse so I mix it and voalahhh we got the art of the demo , with respect of our simbol, well All the bigs bands have a simbol: metallica have the ninja star, slipknot the tribal S, chimaira the chaos star, and i said: why Archaic Winter can not have a simbol? So I took inspiration and i mixed the satanic trident with the inverse pentagram of the Left Hand Path with the chaos star and the inverse cross and we have the trident of the evil chaos, i felt me like an alchemist when i did that (laughs).

In what year was created archaic winter?, how the band started?, and who was the first members of the band? how born the idea of create archaic winter? and how born the idea of back with archaic winter?
Greg Maupin: Well, I started the band in 2006 and had Peter Hasselbrack (bloodsoaked) sing on the first album called The Psychology of Death on Metalbolic Records. I started the band after my previous band abruptly disbanded. I did not want to give up writing and recording music so I decided to create a project of my own that would release dark, furious music that has no boundaries and no restrictions. I had to stop Archaic Winter after 1 year because I had some bad health issues. But now, I am healthy again and I am ready to take Archaic Winter as far as we can. I decided to bring Archaic Winter back to life because I have so many ideas and I simply cannot find local musicians who can keep up with me and my ideas. I do not procrastinate or hesitate! Life is short and I want to make music not sit on my ass talking about it. I am keeping Archaic Winter to a limited number of members because in the past I have had problems with band mates who were not reliable and efficient. Also, I always felt as if I let myself down by killing Archaic Winter. My health problems slowed me down but I regret stopping the project. I suppose you can say that I am now keeping a promise to myself. And that promise is to be true to the project and true to myself by releases the most energetic and furious metal album that I can.

And like last questions: Do you have a message for your fans? 
Greg Maupin: Just that I am very grateful for any and all support. Please know we are always true to ourselves and true to Metal! It is not about how you dress or how you wear your hair. It is about what you have in your heart! The South American scene is awesome and I hope to see everyone on the road someday! Metal for life!
